School Tours & Programs

Lexington History Museums has partnered with a team of teachers from the Lexington schools to develop a rich selection of school programs in American Revolutionary and Colonial history suitable for elementary through high school age students. All of LHM’s programs meet both National Standards and the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks.

Lexington and the Making of America
Where It All Began: A New Understanding of April 19, 1775

This curriculum aligns with the Massachusetts History and Social Science Framework for Grades 3, 5, and High School. Each lesson includes an introductory activity, lesson activity, discussion points for lesson activities, assessments, and grade level suggestions as referenced in the Massachusetts History and Social Science Framework.

Executive Summary: Lexington and the Making of America

Lesson 1: Life in the 1770’s – Making Parallel Comparisons with Life Today

Compare and contrast the commonalities and differences of life between the centuries

 School Tours

Using LHM’s extensive collection of original objects and archival material, students can be “history detectives.” They learn about the famous Battle on the Green and the “First Shot” of the Revolution and gain hands-on knowledge about the people and life in Colonial America, with Lexington as our example, at a crucial time in our history leading up to and during the first 24 hours of the American Revolution.

  • 1 tour/program:     $7

  • 2 tours/programs:  $9

  • 3 tours/programs:  $12

  • 4 tours/programs:  $14

    * We admit 1 FREE chaperone for every 10 paid students.  Additional chaperones pay the student price.

Suggested Itineraries

Itineraries for school groups can range from 2-4 hours long and include an original, hands-on, curriculum-based program run by our staff plus a related guided tour of one to three of our historic houses and/or sites: Buckman Tavern, Hancock-Clarke House, Munroe Tavern, Battle Green, or Old Burying Ground. Lexington History Museums can offer flexible itineraries for your students’ visit to historic Lexington.

  • Grades 1-3 (2 hours)

    • “Artifact Program” + tour of the Hancock-Clarke House or Buckman Tavern

  • Grades 3-5 (2-3 hours)

    • “What Did Reverend Clarke Eat?” program + tour of the Hancock-Clarke House or Buckman Tavern and Battle Green

    • “What Should I Do?” program + tour of the Munroe Tavern

  • Grades 5-6 (2-3 hours)

    • “Who Fired the First Shot” debate program + tour of Buckman Tavern and Battle Green

    • “What Should I Do?” program + tour of the Munroe Tavern and Battle Green

  • Grades 7-10 (2-3 hours)

    • “Who Fired the First Shot?” research program + tour of Buckman Tavern and Battle Green
